About Me

I believe each one of us seeks growth and healing in order to bring forward more fully our life’s purpose and uniqueness. I see this as a challenging, exciting, and important part of the human journey.

I grew up on a tropical island, in the cross currents of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, where the trade winds warmed never ending sunny skies, speaking several languages and negotiating the differences of culture, class and race that were typical of island life everywhere. It was a time of great social, political, and economic change. From an early age I looked for answers to some of the difficult questions of human existence. Why does life seem unfair, what causes suffering, why do people make choices that cause unhappiness, for themselves or others, what gets in the way of living richer, happier lives?

These questions took me to my first career as a student of literature, and then, as a teacher. Over time I found that my interests where less in the subject matter I was teaching and more in what got in the way of my students learning successfully and enjoyably. It seemed a natural evolution to begin working on a clinical degree that would allow me to work more directly with the obstacles each one of us faces in our human journey. I have been practicing psychotherapy since 1983 in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and in private practice since 1988.
